For a first Naksan walk, choose the finishing point before you choose the station. A visit to Naksan Park, a wall walk ending at Heunginjimun, and the longer Naksan section to Gwanghuimun are not identical routes. Saving only “Naksan” in a map app leaves that decision unresolved.
This guide focuses on the walk from Hyehwamun (혜화문) through Naksan Park (낙산공원) to Heunginjimun (흥인지문), also known as Dongdaemun. It helps you compare that outing with a shorter park visit and recognise the longer route on the official website.
Why you may see both 2.1 km and 3.2 km
Seoul's cultural information site describes Hyehwamun–Naksan–Heunginjimun as 2.1 km. The Seoul City Wall site's current route summary lists Hyehwamun–Gwanghuimun as 3.2 km, with approximately 90 minutes of walking. These descriptions use different finishing gates. There is also an inconsistency within the City Wall page: its map text uses “Gwanghwamun”, while the main route description repeatedly says “Gwanghuimun”. These are different gates. This article does not direct you to Gwanghwamun or attempt the extension: its finish is Heunginjimun. Use the named endpoint and current map together instead of following a distance alone.

A park-only visit is the more flexible choice when you are unsure how much climbing your group wants. It is not necessarily flat or step-free. Choose the gate-to-gate version when the walk itself is your main activity, rather than adding it after an already tiring day.
Start at Hyehwamun, not just Hyehwa Station
The City Wall operator directs visitors starting at Hyehwamun to Hansung University Station (한성대입구역), Line 4, Exit 4. Its approach estimate is about three minutes. For access from the other end, it lists Dongdaemun Station (동대문역), Lines 1 and 4, Exit 10 near the wall park. Those are approach references, not the duration of your entire outing. Hyehwa Station (혜화역) is a separate starting choice for the park. Even official pages differ in their approach estimates from that station. Use three waypoints, with a decision at the top
- Hyehwamun / 혜화문: confirm that you are at the starting gate and follow the signed Naksan direction. Save the gate separately from your subway station.
- Naksan Park / 낙산공원: pause to assess your energy, weather and remaining daylight. Continuing to the finishing gate is optional. If the next part of your route is unclear, consult the official map before moving on.
- Heunginjimun / 흥인지문: use this as the finish for this plan. Search your journey back from Dongdaemun Station; do not silently extend the outing because another gate appears in the longer official route description.
The operator's detailed sequence passes the Catholic University back road and Jangsu Village before Naksan, then the Ihwa area and City Wall Museum area toward Heunginjimun. For your own schedule, reserve an unhurried block and keep a later meal or booking flexible. Published walking estimates exclude your subway journey and may not match your pace, breaks or photographs. If your available time has shrunk, switch to a park visit before starting rather than rushing the whole wall section.
Entry, evening visits and residential streets
The city cultural guide lists the park and wall walk as free and always open. That describes normal access, not a guarantee against temporary works, severe weather or a closed side entrance. Check notices and on-site barriers. No attraction ticket is needed for the ordinary outdoor walk; your travel and food costs remain separate. Official hours and fee listing.
For an evening outing, arrive while you can still identify your route and return point. Open access does not mean that every alley is equally well lit or that trains run all night. If you are uncomfortable with the path, turn back by a known route or shorten the visit. Do not climb the wall or enter a closed area for a photograph.
People live around the route. Keep voices low, avoid blocking doorways and steps, and treat a residential lane as someone's neighbourhood. A viewpoint is not a reason to enter private property. The operator specifically asks visitors to be considerate in Jangsu and Ihwa villages.
A weather alternative that does not require finishing the walk
If rain or slippery conditions make the climb unattractive, change the outing before leaving your accommodation. Save this short route card: 한성대입구역 → 혜화문 → 낙산공원 → 흥인지문 → 동대문역. Decide in advance which point you will use if you stop early. You do not need to complete a longer route to have a worthwhile walk.
