Boarding a KTX at Seoul Station: Concourse, Platform, Car and Seat

Checked: 14 October 2026, Korea time. This guide is for travelers who already have, or are about to buy, a KTX ticket departing from Seoul Station. Platform assignments and service changes must be checked on the day.

A calm KTX departure starts before you reach the station. Open your ticket, check the departure station, and decide when you want to be in the mainline train concourse. Arriving on a subway platform called “Seoul Station” is only one part of that journey.

The useful order is simple: station, ticket, train number, platform, car, seat. Keep those six details separate and the signs become much easier to use.

First, make sure the ticket really says Seoul

KTX is a train service, not a single departure point. The Korea Tourism Organization lists Seoul, Yongsan and Cheongnyangni among KTX departure stations. A hotel in Seoul does not mean every intercity train leaves from Seoul Station. Read the station on your actual booking before setting a route in a map app. Official guide to trains in Korea

Save the Korean station name as well: 서울역 for Seoul Station. If the ticket says a different station, build the trip around that station. Do this before you leave the hotel, while it is still easy to change your departure time or transport.

For a group, one person can read the booking aloud and another can check the map destination. That small second check is particularly useful when you have searched several departures or bought separate outward and return tickets.

Allow time after the subway or AREX arrives

Seoul Station connects mainline trains, urban rail and the airport railroad. They use different boarding areas. Follow the signs for KTX and the mainline train concourse, rather than assuming the first set of gates you see is the right one.

AREX's current guide shows its Express facilities below ground and a connection through the KTX waiting area. The practical implication is that the transfer includes walking and changes of level. A map app's arrival time at the station should not become your planned KTX boarding time. AREX station and transfer guide

For a first visit, a reasonable planning target is to reach the mainline concourse about 30–40 minutes before departure. This is an editorial buffer, not KORAIL's official minimum connection time. Add more time if you need a ticket counter, step-free access, help with luggage or a meeting point for several people.

For example, with a fictional 11:00 departure, aiming to be in the concourse around 10:20–10:30 leaves room to find the board and sort out a small problem. A subway scheduled to arrive at 10:50 gives you much less room, even if the route planner labels both places “Seoul Station.”

If you are coming directly from an international flight, allow for immigration, baggage collection and the possibility of a delayed arrival before choosing a fixed train. The example above is for navigating the station; it is not a safe airport-to-KTX connection calculation.

Have the issued ticket ready before looking for coffee

Open the ticket in the channel where you purchased it and follow its instructions for presenting it. A card-payment notification alone does not establish that you have the required travel document. KORAIL's smartphone guidance distinguishes the issued ticket from the reservation and payment steps. Some details on that legacy page are dated, so use your current ticket instructions for the exact display or printing method. KORAIL ticket guidance

  • Check the travel date and departure time.
  • Check the departure and arrival stations.
  • Find the train number, then the car and seat details.
  • Confirm you can access the tickets for everyone traveling.
  • Keep your phone charged and any required identification within reach.

If a seller supplied a voucher or exchange instruction, resolve that before heading to the platform. Do not assume every email attachment is ready to board with. If the ticket is missing, ask at the appropriate counter while you still have time.

For mobile access, the earlier Wi-Fi and tourist eSIM checklist can help you prepare. Save essential journey details as a backup, but do not assume a screenshot replaces the ticket format your seller requires.

Match the train number, not just the destination

Several trains can head toward the same city. Match your ticket's train number and departure time to the current departure board, then find the displayed boarding platform. KORAIL specifically advises passengers to cross-check the train number, time and boarding location before getting on. KORAIL's boarding checks

Useful words to recognize are 열차번호 for train number, 타는 곳 for boarding platform, 호차 for car, and 좌석 for seat. A car number tells you which part of the train to board; it is a different detail from the platform number.

Check again when you reach the platform. If the train number or time does not match, stop and ask a member of staff. A train going in roughly the right direction is not a substitute for the service on your ticket.

Find your car before settling the luggage

Once the correct service is confirmed, locate the car shown on your ticket. If you have several bags, decide who handles each one before boarding so nobody has to stop in the doorway to reorganize.

Use the designated luggage space available on your train, keep doors and aisles clear, and ask the crew if you cannot find a safe place. Keep valuables, your ticket and anything needed during the journey in a smaller bag. This guide does not promise space for a particular suitcase or specify a baggage allowance; check KORAIL's current conditions if you have unusually large items.

Before sitting down, compare the seat number with the ticket one more time. If another passenger is there, show the details calmly or ask the crew to help. Avoid moving to an apparently empty seat without checking.

Leave food and shopping until the essentials are settled

Once you know the boarding location and can access the ticket, decide whether there is genuinely time to buy something. Count the queue and the walk back, not just the time at the cashier. If you want a sit-down meal before departure, use a larger buffer than the station-navigation example above.

If plans change or you may miss the train, contact KORAIL or the seller promptly. Check the conditions for your ticket before cancelling or buying again. Do not assume you can use a missed departure's ticket on the next train, and do not make a duplicate purchase merely because a payment screen is slow. The official KORAIL site is the starting point for current bookings and assistance.

The best final check takes only a moment: correct station, usable ticket, matching train number, current platform, assigned car and seat. Then put the phone away long enough to board carefully.
