For a first day trip to Suwon, start with Hwaseong Haenggung Palace, leave time for lunch, then choose one part of the fortress to explore. This plan suits visitors who enjoy historic buildings and outdoor walking but want room to shorten the day. Keep your evening in Seoul flexible so that a meal or a slower walk does not become a missed connection.
Understand the palace and fortress before choosing your route
Suwon Hwaseong Fortress (수원화성) surrounds the old city center. Built under King Jeongjo in the late eighteenth century, it includes gates, walls and defensive structures spread around the city.
Hwaseong Haenggung Palace (화성행궁) is a palace complex where the king stayed during visits to his father's tomb. It is a specific destination with an entrance and admission hours. Save the palace's full name in your map app; searching only for the fortress may lead you to a different starting point.
Plan both the journey to Suwon and the last part to the palace
Begin your transport search at your actual Seoul accommodation. Suwon Station (수원역) is connected to metropolitan Line 1. If you prefer a mainline train, check KORAIL's official booking search for your date, departure station and Suwon destination. Compare the complete journey, including reaching the station and waiting for the selected departure.
For one concrete station-to-palace connection, the official transport guide lists this sequence:
- Leave Suwon Station through Exit 4 and find the stop in front of Novotel, named 수원역 노보텔.
- Take local bus 11 or 13 on a departure serving 화성행궁, 수원성지.
- Alight at that stop and continue to Hwaseong Haenggung. The guide estimates about five minutes on foot from the stop.
Check the live stop listing and direction before boarding; the same route number on the other side of a road can take you away from the palace. The five-minute approach is the operator's estimate, and excludes the bus ride and waiting. The stop names above are useful to copy into your map app.
For the return, request a route from your actual finishing point to Suwon Station. Do not assume the outbound alighting stop is also your return boarding stop. A taxi using the palace's saved address is an alternative if the bus connection does not suit your group; compare the current estimate before deciding. Build the day around a small group of stops

The foundation's suggested routes connect the palace with northern fortress sights. Use its map to choose the paths that suit you. This itinerary is a sequence to adapt, not a timed guided tour.
Hwahongmun Watergate (화홍문) stands where the northern wall crosses Suwoncheon Stream. Seeing a watergate after a palace and a city gate adds variety without making every fortress structure part of your checklist.
Choose your walking load deliberately
The foundation describes a fortress circumference of about 5.7 kilometers, with the western side crossing Paldalsan Mountain (팔달산). That figure is not the distance of your whole day: walking inside the palace, finding lunch and reaching transport add to it. The full perimeter also should not be treated as a promise of one continuous, step-free walking route.
For a shorter day, finish after the palace and one gate. Add the Paldalsan section only after checking its current route and deciding that you want a hill walk. If anyone in your group needs step-free access, ask the visitor information staff to help select a specific route.
Check the weather before leaving Seoul. Carry water and suitable footwear, and keep a break in the plan. Both the palace and fortress involve outdoor movement. If persistent rain makes this day unsuitable, consider a Seoul Museum of Craft Art visit on an open day, allowing for its outdoor approaches and separate buildings.
Check admission and any separately arranged activities
As checked on September 12, 2026, the current visitor guide lists the fortress as free to visit. The palace is listed as open daily, with regular hours of 9 a.m.–6 p.m., last admission at 5 p.m. and an individual adult ticket at KRW 2,000. Times are local Korean time. Check the same page again before traveling, including any night-opening dates.
Guided commentary has its own arrangements. The official guide information gives priority to advance group bookings and warns that requests on the day may be unavailable. Ask about language, group size and availability if a guide matters to you. Check performance or activity notices separately from ordinary palace admission.
