Seoul’s autonomous taxis are an interesting addition to a night out, but a visitor should arrange the ride in a different order from an ordinary sightseeing stop. First check that the service appears in your own app, that both addresses fall inside its operating zone, and that the date and payment setup work. Only then decide whether to build the evening around it.
Practical answer: treat an autonomous taxi as an optional Gangnam experience, with a normal way back already planned. The official information checked on 25 October 2026 does not establish that every overseas phone number, foreign-issued card or tourist account can complete an autonomous booking.

Start with the weekday, not the photograph
Kakao Mobility’s current Seoul Autonomous Vehicle introduction lists the Gangnam zone-based service on weekdays, from 22:00 to 05:00. It separately describes a daytime, stop-based service in Sangam and several autonomous bus routes. These are different products: a timetable for one is not a timetable for all of them.
For a trip crossing midnight, inspect the service notice for your actual departure date. Do not assume that a late Friday operating window means that a Saturday evening ride is available. If you are only in Seoul over a weekend, check this before setting aside a late-night sightseeing slot.
The city’s August 2026 announcement described an expansion from seven to nineteen vehicles. That is useful context for understanding the service’s scale, but it is not a live vehicle count near your hotel and cannot guarantee a short wait.

Put both ends of the journey inside the service zone
The operator says that the departure point and destination must both be inside the service area. Its introduction page supplies a Gangnam service-area map. Use that boundary before selecting a restaurant or deciding that the ride will take you back to accommodation elsewhere in Seoul.
A convenient test is to enter two real addresses you might use, rather than a broad place name such as “Gangnam.” Check the pickup side of the street and the final drop-off point. If the app does not offer the relevant service, keep the same evening plan and use another way to travel instead of repeatedly moving the map pin into an unfamiliar street.
The city’s release discusses school-zone approval and future expansion. Neither a policy announcement nor the name of a district establishes that every road or address is bookable. The operating map and the booking result for your endpoints are the useful checks.

“Driverless” does not mean you will be alone in the vehicle
Kakao Mobility states that a trained autonomous-driving manager travels aboard for safety. Plan around the actual service description, not an image of an empty driver’s seat. Follow the manager’s instructions and ask before filming people or the inside of the vehicle.
Keep the ride simple: one departure point, one destination and enough time to get out without rushing. If your party needs a child seat, substantial luggage space or a particular accessibility arrangement, verify that requirement through the service before relying on it. The sources reviewed here do not establish those arrangements for every vehicle.
The August release also mentions possible daytime operations after further review. This is a useful reminder to separate a future proposal from a service you can select today. Do not use an anticipated expansion as the basis for an airport transfer or another time-critical journey.

Check your own app, phone number and payment setup
The city identifies Kakao T as the calling channel for the Gangnam autonomous taxi. Kakao Mobility also promotes k.ride to international travelers, but its public international-traveler page lists ordinary vehicle categories rather than establishing access to this autonomous service. Do not assume that the two apps offer identical products.
Before your evening out, open the app you intend to use and check the complete sequence: sign-in, any phone verification, the service option for the two addresses, payment registration and the displayed conditions. A working ordinary taxi account does not, by itself, verify that a particular autonomous ride can be purchased.
If a field or verification message is unclear, stop before authorizing a charge and consult official support. Do not borrow another person’s identity details or change your information to make a booking go through. It is better to keep the experiment optional than to troubleshoot an unfamiliar payment flow outside late at night.

Read the actual quote instead of reusing an old “free ride” claim
The city says the service became paid in April 2026. A blog or video from the earlier trial can therefore give the wrong impression of what a ride costs now.
There is also a detail worth noticing in the official sources: the August city release summarizes fares by reference to conventional taxis and a late-night surcharge, while Kakao’s paid-service page describes a fixed per-trip fare for Seoul Autonomous Vehicle. This guide does not turn those differently worded pages into a universal fare promise. Inspect the actual service name, quoted amount and cancellation conditions in your own booking flow before confirming.
Save a record of the confirmed journey and payment through the app. If the price or service type is not what you expected, resolve it before calling rather than assuming that an ordinary taxi meter or an old promotional offer will apply.

A short checklist for the evening
- Confirm the service’s operating day and time for the actual pickup, including any midnight boundary.
- Verify both addresses against the current Gangnam service area.
- Check that your own account, phone verification and payment method reach the intended booking screen.
- Read the displayed service name, total and cancellation conditions before authorizing the ride.
- Confirm any essential passenger or luggage requirement rather than assuming it.
- Keep a normal taxi or other suitable return plan, along with your accommodation’s address.
For a relaxed night, finish dinner before the planned ride, choose a straightforward drop-off and leave room for the experiment to fail without spoiling the evening. The interesting part is experiencing a different form of transport; successful travel planning means not needing that one vehicle to make the rest of the night work.
